Root vegetables — potatoes, carrots, beets — are still available, but supplies are running low and they’re just not the same after being storage all winter. I miss fresh carrots in particular, which made it pretty tough to edit together this video of the Vanderweele Farm carrot harvest from last September.

In March I spent 10 days following the 2010 Iditarod as a photographer for Alaska Dispatch. Incredible weather — if a little cold — and a 4th championship for Lance Mackey.

The day after Mackey crossed the finish line we hopped in our Cessna 206 for a day trip to King Island and Little Diomede. We saw this guy wandering across the ice when we were on final approach to the ice strip in front of Little Diomede. Couldn’t ask for any more.

Digging is the fun part of clamming. This is unfortunate because cleaning the creatures is a major project and you’re always tempted to harvest Just. One. More. Clam.

On this trip we planned to dig just enough for dinner and we ended up with dinner (breaded), a chowder, and a some given away. Still, they were delicious and got us ready for our salmon (Kasilof) and halibut (Deep Creek) trips the rest of the weekend.

This morning Mat-Su Regional Hospital conducted a mass casualty incident to test their incident command readiness and the Central Mat-Su Fire Department helped get the patients to the triage area. I had some time to take pictures before I had to return to my engine (this image was taken the instant before the lead medic pointedly asked “Are you going to help?”).
